The Nova Scotia Jazz Band is firmly in the tradition of the groups led by Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier, Bix Beiderbecke and Alex Welsh. Featuring the world class cornet of Mike Daly, the banjo wizardry of Duncan Findlay, the elegantly swinging string bass of Ken MacDonald and the clarinet and saxophones of John Burgess this sweet and hot quartet are a fresh take on the classic jazz style.
The NSJB have appeared at the Glastonbury and Swaledale Festivals, the Kelburn Garden Party and the Ayr, Tarragona, Inverurie, Southport, Shetland, Glasgow, Bute, Keswick, Fife, Islay, Swanage and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals. The band have also played with some of the UK’s finest stars of mainstream and Dixieland jazz including Roy Williams, Digby Fairweather, John Service and Forrie Cairns and in 2011 were named ‘Best Early Jazz Band’ in the Scottish Jazz Awards.
June 2012 sees the first performance on the silver screen by the NSJB in the TWS film ‘The Happy Lands’ where they play the part of touring Dixieland jazz band in 1920’s Fife. The fifth Nova Scotia Jazz Band CD ‘The Beale Street Blues’ is out now and it features the sensational piano playing of Parliamentary Jazz Award winner Brian Kellock.
This is toe tapping and up lifting swinging jazz that’s guaranteed to leave you smiling!
